About Brixham A short introduction to Brixham

A short introduction to Brixham

Brixham, Torbay

Located in the South-west of England, Brixham is a lovely fishing town situated in the southern end of Torbay, located in the county of Devon. Built around the harbour, the town was the largest fishing port in the South West of England during the middle ages. Today, the harbour remains in use as a dock for trawlers and fishing boats. A replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, Golden Hind, is permanently moored there. A long breakwater protects the outer harbour, providing opportunity for sea angling. For any avid birdwatchers, Purple Sandpiper birds appear here in wintertime.

Sheltering the southern side of the harbour lies Berry Head. The headland is home to a lighthouse, built in 1906; an Iron-Age fort, which most of has regrettably been destroyed; and a national nature reserve. Berry Head is not only home to rare plant and insect life, but also many sea caves.

Local limestone use to be quarried from the Headland, and was used to build the breakwater located close to Brixham Harbour, which still protects the coast today. Piers and ramps were built by American servicemen on the breakwater during the Second World War, and left for the D-day landings. Breakwater beach is one of the cleanest beaches on the English Riviera, with disabled access and plenty of parking facilities. With a number of dive schools in the area, Breakwater Beach is also a very popular place for scuba diving, and also the casual swim.

Brixham Events

There are a multitude of festivals and events ran entirely by locals during the course of the year, benefiting the community and local economy. BrixFest, being relatively new, is quickly becoming a popular family-friendly festival in Brixham, similar to Brixham Pirate Festival, where world records are attempted to be broken, free entertainment is provided, live music performed, and the town is filled with Pirates. Cowtown carnival is held yearly during the summer, as a reminder of when Brixham was two separate populations, connected by a single marshy lane. The main attraction in Cowtown is a music event “Hap’nin” and takes place in St. Mary’s Park (hence the locals nicknamed the event “Party in the Park”). Here local bands and schoolchildren perform on stage, and food and drink market stalls are set up.

Local Schools

Brixham has a number of schools, generally located in the middle of residential areas for convenient access and minimal travel. Primaries include Eden Park Primary School Academy, Brixham Church of England Primary School, Furzenham Primary School, and Saint Margaret Clitherow Catholic Primary School. The town also has one main secondary school, Brixham College, and a short distance away, Churston Grammar School.
